The Mata Jai Kaur Maternal and Child Health Centre (MJK-MCHC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality, accessible healthcare to women and children in the district of Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, India, an area that has among the worst maternal and child health outcomes in the world. The MJK-MCHC is a program of the Prominent Homes Charitable Organization (PHCO) based in Calgary, Canada.
Rajasthan has among the worst maternal and child health outcomes in the world. Since 2010, MJK-MCHC has provided antenatal care and safe delivery services to thousands of women who would not otherwise have access to quality care.
We serve a catchment area with 558 villages and close to 80,000 women of childbearing age.
Since 2010 we have
- Provided comprehensive antenatal care to thousands of women (96% of whom come from very-low socioeconomic backgrounds)
- Delivered over 800 babies, often from complicated pregnancies
- Had a lower proportion of underweight births (12%) than the district overall (20%)
- Have delivered the same number of girls and boys (compared to the district's sex ratio of 895:1000)
- Had over 16,000 outpatient visits
Our aim is to improve maternal and child health outcomes among impoverished rural families that would otherwise not have access to quality care. Our broader vision is of a society where women are empowered as agents of change and children are free to achieve their highest potential in life. Such a society is free of unnecessary and preventable deaths of women and children due to a lack of quality reproductive and child health services. We believe that improving the health of women and children is a fundamental step towards overcoming intergenerational cycles of poverty. In our view, health is not just the absence of disease; rather, it is a state of wholeness unifying physical, mental and social wellbeing.
We envision a healthy society where women are empowered as agents of change and children are free to achieve their highest potential in life. Such a society is free of unnecessary and preventable deaths of women and children due to a lack of quality maternal and child health services.
